ABOUT

A research institute for
longevity science

Aging is not an unavoidable fate — it is a biological phenomenon that science can control. Abe Youan Aging Research Institute (AYARI) studies and intervenes in aging across five domains: nutrition, exercise, mental health, recovery, and environment. Our mission is to build a society where everyone can achieve a biological age ten years younger than their chronological age.

NEW · XPRIZE HEALTHSPAN

Competing in the world's largest
healthspan prize

We are competing in XPRIZE Healthspan — a USD 101 million global competition for healthspan extension. In the qualifying round, we carried out longevity interventions in mouse models and were selected as a semifinalist, placing in the TOP 40 from a field of over 700 teams worldwide. We are now advancing to human clinical trials in pursuit of the finals.

RESEARCH

Five approaches
to longevity

AYARI studies the biology of aging and develops interventions across five domains related to healthspan extension.

01

栄養Nutrition

Food and metabolism are the most fundamental foundations of health. We investigate how nutrients influence aging processes and develop intervention strategies. Research into cellular regeneration and repair also belongs to this domain.

02

運動Exercise

Exercise is one of the most evidence-backed interventions for slowing aging. We study age-related changes in physical function and the potential of exercise to regulate the aging process.

03

精神Mental Health

Mental health is closely linked to biological aging. We investigate how stress, cognitive function, and social connection affect aging, and explore interventions from a psychological perspective.

04

回復・睡眠Recovery & Sleep

Sleep and recovery are the body's time for repair and regeneration. We study how sleep quality and circadian rhythms influence aging and work to optimize recovery.

05

環境Environment

Human aging is powerfully shaped by our surroundings. We investigate how environmental factors affect aging and study the conditions that support healthy longevity.

THE SCIENCE OF YŌJŌ

The science of yōjō.

Nutrition, exercise, mental health, recovery, environment — the five research domains of AYARI align fundamentally with the philosophy of yōjō (養生), the holistic health practice of Japan's traditional medicine cultivated over several centuries.

Yōjō is not about treating disease; it is a preventive, integrative approach to nurturing health and regulating aging. It sees the body as a single system and seeks to optimize the whole of daily life — a philosophy that mirrors the aims of modern longevity science.

AYARI traces its origin to Abe Youan, a kampo physician who began his medical practice in 1731 (Kyōhō 16) as a personal physician to the daimyō. The fifth-generation Youan studied Dutch medicine at Ogata Kōan's Tekijuku academy and was among the first to integrate Western medicine. Rooted in Eastern tradition while constantly absorbing the most advanced medicine of each era — this spirit, now 290 years on, still guides AYARI's research philosophy.

AYARI will validate Japan's legacy of yōjō wisdom with modern science and share it with the world.

PARTNERSHIP

Three modes of collaboration

Aging is a complex challenge that demands collaboration across disciplines. AYARI builds diverse partnerships to bring research results into society.

01

Collaborative R&D

Across the five domains of longevity research, we pursue joint research with universities, research institutes, and companies. We offer forms of collaboration tailored to your goals — joint research contracts, sponsored research, data sharing, and joint patents.

02

Consulting

We provide expert advice to companies working in aging and healthy longevity: scientific evidence evaluation for products, clinical trial design, and regulatory / pharmaceutical strategy. Our operational experience with regulators, accumulated through food import and customs, is a core strength.

03

Commercialization & Startup Incubation

Bringing research results to society — from commercialization assessment and business planning to regulatory strategy and partner networks. Our support is grounded in our own experience of taking research all the way from the lab to product and global rollout.
