Longevity Science
SINCE 1731ABOUT
A research institute for
longevity science
Aging is not an unavoidable fate — it is a biological phenomenon that science can control. Abe Yoan Aging Research Institute (AYARI) studies and intervenes in aging through five pillars — nutrition, exercise, mental health, recovery and sleep, and environment — together with setsuyo, the foundation that regulates them. Our mission is to build a society where everyone can achieve a biological age ten years younger than their chronological age.
Five pillars,
one foundation
Yōjō is a Japanese guide to living well, systematized in the Edo-period Yōjōkun. AYARI adds an environmental perspective and presents it as Yojo 2.0 — a framework for healthy longevity grounded in modern scientific evidence. The five pillars are not independent health behaviors; together they form a single interdependent system.
Setsuyo
Setsuyo stands alongside the five pillars and, at the same time, acts as the meta-principle that regulates them: an adaptive self-regulation that reads feedback from body, mind, behavior, and environment, avoiding both excess and depletion.
Core principle: harmonious self-regulation — actively tuning behavior and environment across the whole life course.

THE SCIENCE OF YŌJŌ
The science of yōjō.
Nutrition, exercise, mental health, recovery and sleep, environment — these five pillars, and the setsuyo that regulates them, root AYARI's framework in the philosophy of yōjō (養生), the holistic health practice of Japan's traditional medicine cultivated over several centuries.
Yōjō is not about treating disease; it is a preventive, integrative approach to nurturing health and regulating aging. It sees the body as a single system and seeks to optimize the whole of daily life — a philosophy that mirrors the aims of modern longevity science.
AYARI traces its origin to Abe Yoan, a kampo physician who began his medical practice in 1731 (Kyōhō 16) as a personal physician to the daimyō. The fifth-generation Yoan studied Dutch medicine at Ogata Kōan's Tekijuku academy and was among the first to integrate Western medicine. Rooted in Eastern tradition while constantly absorbing the most advanced medicine of each era — this spirit, now 290 years on, still guides AYARI's research philosophy.
AYARI will validate Japan's legacy of yōjō wisdom with modern science and share it with the world.
PARTNERSHIP
Three modes of collaboration
Aging is a complex challenge that demands collaboration across disciplines. AYARI builds diverse partnerships to bring research results into society.
Collaborative R&D
Across the five pillars of Yojo 2.0, we pursue joint research with universities, research institutes, and companies. We offer forms of collaboration tailored to your goals — joint research contracts, sponsored research, data sharing, and joint patents.
Consulting
We provide expert advice to companies working in aging and healthy longevity: scientific evidence evaluation for products, clinical trial design, and regulatory / pharmaceutical strategy. Our operational experience with regulators, accumulated through food import and customs, is a core strength.
Commercialization & Startup Incubation
Bringing research results to society — from commercialization assessment and business planning to regulatory strategy and partner networks. Our support is grounded in our own experience of taking research all the way from the lab to product and global rollout.
